FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

For your convenience we have listed below a few of the most common queries we have received from our guests over the years & we hope you find this helpful.

However, if you have a query that has not been answered below, please feel free to either email us at mum@mumsgreatcomfortfood.com or call the team directly on 0131 260 9806.

Do I need a reservation?

No, we don't take reservations. Please just come along and the team will take great care of you.

Can I make a reservation?

We have on occasion a very limited availability for small groups (7+), limited to seasonality, so please ask & we will do our best to accommodate, otherwise please just come along & the team will take great care of you.

During peak times such as August & New Year (January 1st) we are unable to take any group bookings.

Do you take large group bookings?

We do accept advance large pre-order group reservations when possible (groups of 10 or more) but these require both a non-refundable deposit & pre-ordering, again availability is limited to seasonality.

During peak times such as August & New Year (January 1st) we are unable to take any group bookings.

For all enquiries please contact mum@mumsgreatcomfortfood.com or contact the team directly on 0131 260 9806 we will always do our utmost to accommodate you if we can.

Please note that all large group bookings require both a deposit & pre-order. A set menu can also be provided on request.

What if we come along & you are fully booked?

This of course can happen, in these circumstances our team will run a wait list. The waiting time can be anything from 10-15 minutes depending on the time of the year. In the meantime you can enjoy a drink at one of the local bars and the team will call you when your table is ready.

How does the waiting list work?

We don’t take reservations, but during peak times we do run what we call a ‘waiting list.’ This is simply a list of guest names who want to dine with us that evening & are content & happy to wait until a table becomes available. Our team will advise how long the wait should be, you can then either choose to wait outside the restaurant but some guests just prefer to go for a lovely drink somewhere or go for a walk & return in the timeframe advised to them.

There are empty tables, why can’t I have them?

You may indeed see empty tables, but these will have been appointed to the people who joined our wait list i.e. those people who have either queued outside or gone for a walk.

Someone just walked in after me & was seated?

For this query, please see all the points above. Everyone is welcome at MUMS Great Comfort Food, we want everyone to dine with us, but this is the fairest system for all guests. If a guest walks in and takes a table that you perceive as vacant and being denied to you…..it actually means that guest joined our waitlist & has waited the appointed time for that table. We are not purposefully refusing to seat you.

I’ve been told I need to join a queue, but I don’t see one?

Some people like to chat & wait outside & some people are happy to go for a walk, the ‘queue’ is not always a physical line of people (although often times it is), the term ‘joining the queue’ means adding your name on our waitlist & waiting for a table to become available that evening.

I am visiting for the Edinburgh Festival, will I have to queue for your restaurant?

Queues, the Edinburgh Festival and invariably the rain, all go hand in hand. And yes, during August we will be running a wait list during peak times. But we are firm believers that all good things come to those with patience, and because most people are rushing off to see a show, the tables move pretty quickly so your wait should not be too long.

If you really wish to miss these golden moments, we suggest visiting for breakfast when it might be a little quieter or later in the afternoon before the dinner rush.

Do you have a children’s menu?

Indeed we do, please just ask the team. It is just smaller portions of our grown up dishes & it costs £5.00.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, you can, we accept small well-behaved pups no bigger than a French Bulldog. Our team may be able to allow a bigger dog but please check with them on the day.

Do you cater for people who are gluten intolerant?

Absolutely, our sausages are 100% pure, with no rusk and have been since we opened our doors back in 2003.

Please ask the team for guidance on what is suitable for you on the day. Please also note that this excludes our handmade vegan sausages, which do contain gluten.

Do you cater for coeliac sensitivity?

Indeed we do. Our team is well experienced in assisting our customers with coeliac sensitivity and many of our dishes can be perfectly adapted for you. Please notify your server on the day and they will be able to assist you with your ordering.

General allergen enquiry

We endeavour to assist all our customers with their dining experience, however should you or a member of your party have a specific allergen query please contact us on mum@mumsgreatcomfortfood.com and we will endeavour to assist you.

Please note due to the fact that we cannot guarantee that our raw ingredients have not come into contact with peanuts at source, we cannot cater for this allergy.

Do you cater for Vegetarians?

MUMS Great Comfort Food has been serving glorious vegetarian food since we opened our doors back in 2003, so please come along & enjoy.

Do you cater for Vegans?

Yes, we are as passionate about our vegan food as we are about everything else on our menu, both our vegan & vegetarian range is pretty extensive & we can also assure you that all of our vegan food is made in-house by our team (this includes the vegan meat for our VGN Burger & our handmade vegan sausages), nothing is bought in (which invariably contains highly processed & hugely unhealthy ingredients).

What is the policy on sustainability at MUMS Great Comfort Food?

A lot of claims are made these days when it comes to sustainability, sadly much of it is greenwashing, that marketing hype that so cynically exploits the good intentions of the general public.

However at MUMS Great Comfort Food we go to great lengths to ensure that all of our ingredients are local, sustainable and ethical, this means that our meats all come from local, family run, humane farms.

All our fish is sourced from a local, family run business with a strong heritage in sustainability, small batch and local fishermen.

We have a huge passion for our vegetarian & vegan cuisine and all our vegan food is made in-house by our team (this includes the vegan meat for our VGN Burger & our handmade vegan sausages), nothing is bought in (which invariably contains highly processed & hugely unhealthy ingredients).

We continually review our suppliers and ingredients to ensure we are delivering to our guests the absolute best in terms of quality, ethics, humanity & responsibility and we will always endeavour to seek perfection when it comes to our impact on the planet and the quality & value for money we bring to you, our guests.
